Why Can't My Child with CHD Remember What They Learn?

    Why do some children with CHD forget what they learn? Explore how attention, memory, and learning work together—and what parents can do to help.

    "We practiced this all week."

    "My child knew the material yesterday, but today it's like they've never seen it before."

    "We review spelling words, math facts, or vocabulary over and over, but it just doesn't stick."

    If this sounds familiar, you're not alone.

    This is one of the most common concerns I hear from parents. It can be especially confusing when your child remembers every detail about their favorite video game, movie, or hobby—but struggles to remember what they learned in school.

    It's natural to wonder:

    • Do they just have a bad memory?

    • Are they not trying hard enough?

    • Is this related to their heart condition?

    The answer is often much more complicated, but understanding why your child is struggling is the first step toward providing the right support.

    Learning Is More Than Memory

    When most of us think about memory, we imagine the brain like a filing cabinet. Information goes in. Later, it comes back out. But learning doesn't really work that way. Before information can be remembered, your child first has to:

    • Pay attention to the information.

    • Understand what it means.

    • Organize it in a meaningful way.

    • Connect it to things they already know.

    • Store it efficiently.

    • Retrieve it later when they need it (and often in a new context).

    A challenge anywhere along this pathway can make it look like a memory problem—even when memory itself isn't the primary issue.

    That's why one child may struggle because they were distracted, another because they process information more slowly, another because anxiety interferes during tests, and another because they never fully understood the material in the first place.

    The end result looks the same:

    "They forgot."

    But the reasons may be very different.

    Children with CHD Don't Always Learn in Predictable Ways

    Children with congenital heart disease (CHD) are at higher risk for neurodevelopmental differences that can affect learning and development. Some children with CHD also have other medical conditions—such as genetic syndromes, prematurity, or neurological complications—that may further influence how they learn. However, one of the most important things I've learned is this:

    Children with CHD rarely fit neatly into a single box. Most have a unique pattern of strengths and challenges.

    Your child may have an excellent vocabulary but struggle to remember multi-step directions.

    They may understand new concepts but have difficulty retrieving information during a test.

    They may excel in one subject while working much harder in another.

    Or they may simply become mentally fatigued after a long school day, making it much harder for new learning to "stick."

    This uneven profile can be confusing for parents and teachers because it doesn't always fit our expectations of how learning "should" work.

    Can CHD Affect Memory?

    The short answer is yes—but probably not in the way most parents imagine.

    Research has shown that some children with CHD are at increased risk for differences in brain development. Depending on the child, these differences may affect the brain networks involved in attention, processing speed, executive functioning, language, visual-spatial skills, and memory. Some children with CHD also have other factors that can influence development, such as a genetic condition, prematurity, or a history of more complex medical or neurological complications.

    However, it's important not to jump to the conclusion that your child simply has a "memory problem." More often, what looks like poor memory actually begins much earlier in the learning process.

    Imagine trying to remember a conversation while several people are talking at once. If you couldn't focus on what was being said, it wouldn't be surprising if you couldn't remember it later. The information was never fully learned in the first place.

    The same thing can happen in school.

    A child who has difficulty paying attention, processes information more slowly, becomes mentally fatigued, struggles to organize information, or feels anxious during learning may appear forgetful—even when their ability to store memories is relatively intact.

    This is one reason children with CHD can have very different learning profiles.

    Two children may both say, "I forgot," but for entirely different reasons.

    Understanding why learning is difficult is far more helpful than labeling it as a memory problem.

    When we identify the specific processes getting in the way of learning, we can provide supports that are much more targeted and much more effective.

    Some Types of Learning Are Harder Than Others

    Not all learning places the same demands on the brain. Some information naturally makes sense because it connects to your child's experiences and interests. It's meaningful. Other learning requires memorizing information that has very little inherent meaning. Think about:

    • multiplication facts

    • spelling words

    • sight words

    • vocabulary lists

    • historical dates

    This type of rote learning is often much more difficult. Children sometimes spend hours reviewing these materials over and over, yet little seems to stick. That doesn't necessarily mean they aren't trying. It may mean they need a different way of learning.

    Helping Learning Stick

    One of the biggest misconceptions about studying is that simply reading something over and over helps it move into long-term memory. In reality, the brain learns best when it has to actively retrieve information.

    Instead of asking your child to reread the same material several times, try helping them:

    • Teach the information back to you.

    • Answer practice questions without looking at their notes.

    • Use flashcards to retrieve information from memory (rather than just read through them over and over).

    • Spread practice across several shorter sessions instead of one long study session.

    • Connect new information to real-life experiences.

    • Draw pictures, create diagrams, use colors, and explain concepts in their own words.

    These strategies require more mental effort—but that effort is exactly what strengthens learning. The goal isn't simply to get through tonight's homework. The goal is to help your child build understanding that creates a foundation to build upon.

    When It's More Than a Study Problem

    Sometimes better study strategies aren't enough. If your child continues struggling despite consistent practice, it may be worth talking with their teacher. Some children benefit from additional educational supports, while others may need a more comprehensive neurodevelopmental evaluation to better understand how they learn.

    A psychoeducational evaluation (commonly completed at school) will help you see your childs cognitive and academic abilities specifically.

    In contrast, a neuropsychological evaluation is more comprehensive.

    This evaluation helps us understand the cognitive processes that support learning, such as attention, language, memory, processing speed, executive functioning, and visual-spatial skills. Looking at these patterns together often provides important clues about why learning feels so difficult—and how to better support your child moving forward.

    Final Thoughts

    Learning isn't one skill—it's a team effort. Attention helps us take information in. Language helps us understand it. Executive functioning helps us organize it. Processing speed helps us keep up. Memory helps us store and retrieve it later. When one part of this system isn't working efficiently, learning becomes harder. For many children with CHD, the challenge isn't a single weak skill—it's the interaction among several processes. That's one reason comprehensive evaluations are so valuable... they help us understand your child's unique patterns, and not just the symptoms.
